Post-Game Wrap-Up

CHICAGO, Ill. (Feb. 12, 2011) - Lindsay Laur and Angela Rodriguez each had double-doubles, but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team fell to UIC, 77-65, Saturday evening at the UIC Pavilion.

The Panthers (9-14, 6-7 Horizon) struggled to overcome the Flames' (11-12, 6-6 Horizon) hot three-point shooting. The home team hit 9-of-18 from three-point range, despite entering the game ninth in the league in three-point percentage and last in threes per game.

"We made some great runs, but just didn't have the discipline to finish it off," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said. "Give UIC credit, Shameia Green had a great game and they hit their big shots down the stretch when we cut it close. I thought, at times, we beat ourselves. The fouls, turnovers, we just need to take better care of the basketball and value every single possession because it is really biting us."

Laur had 20 points and 15 rebounds for her Horizon League-leading 11th double-double of the season. Meanwhile, Rodriguez scored 12 points and dished out a career-best 10 assists for her first collegiate double-double and Milwaukee's first point/assist double-double since 1997. Anne Breland added five 3-pointers for 15 points in the game.

Shameia Green scored a game-high 30 points for UIC, hitting four 3's, while Taylor Foulks hit five treys on her way to 19 points. Briana Hinkle also reached double-figures with 16 points and Jasmine Bailey had 12 rebounds to go with five steals.

The Flames' energy early looked like it was too much for Milwaukee as they jumped out to a 15-5 lead by the 11:24 mark of the opening half. Trailing 19-10, the Panthers caught fire behind Breland, going on an extended 21-12 run to pull within two at 31-29. Breland had three 3's during the run and hit her fifth of the half just before the break to make it just a 35-32 game.

UWM carried the momentum out of the intermission, as Laur scored the first basket out of the gate. After a Hinkle layup, Courtney Lindfors scored four-straight points to give Milwaukee its first lead of the game at 38-37 just over two minutes into the second period.

The Panthers last led at 40-39 before a 10-2 run gave UIC a lead it would not relinquish. Milwaukee was within one or two possession for much of the remainder of the game, but the Flames had an 11-2 run late to eliminate UWM's comeback threat.

Milwaukee shot the ball fairly well, finishing the game at 40 percent from the field and 8-for-17 (.471) from three-point range. It also outrebounding its opponent, 42-33. Unfortunately, the Panthers conceded a 19-9 turnover deficit and UIC forged a 19-6 advantage on points off turnovers.

The Flames finished the game shooting 44.6 percent after a 50 percent clip, which was buoyed by a hot shooting night from beyond the arc. UIC finished with a 20:9 assist-to-turnover ratio, led by Hinkle's eight assists.

UWM returns to the Klotsche Center to start a three-game homestand, its final of the season, Saturday. The Panthers take on Green Bay at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports 32.
