Muncie, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team fell just short in a 101-142 loss to Ball State University at the Lewellan Aquatic Center Friday afternoon in Muncie, Ind.

UWM took six of the 11 top spots overall but came up just short in the overall results.

"It was very special for me to get to take UWM to Ball State," Milwaukee head coach and former BSU swimmer Kyle Clements said. "I really enjoyed getting to see both programs sharing the same pool.

"We took off from Milwaukee fairly early and then sat on the bus for six hours. These travel conditions are not ideal for optimal performance, but I expect our athletes to be able handle any adversary thrown at them. Our men's team is a veteran group and they have done plenty of travel meets before. The women on the other hand are mainly underclassman and transfers. They still need to find their own way. I was proud of everyone but there is clearly more work to do."

The Panthers started the day off well, winning the first race of the meet. Sophomores Becky Yokosh, Emily McClellan, Diana Diel and freshman Sierra Townsend combined to take first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.19, over a full second ahead of second place.

Freshman Kelly Theis kept the winning ways going for UWM in the next swimming event by finishing in the top spot of the 1000 free in 10:52.56.

Senior Sarah Wardecke continued her impressive early season by finishing first in the 50 free (24.51) and 100 free (52.70).

Other first-place finishers were Yokosh in the 100 back (58.29) and McClellan in the 100 breast (1:04.49).

In the day's final event, Wardecke, Yokosh, senior Heidi Niespodzany ran away with the 400 free relay. The four combined to finish in 3:33.79, nearly seven seconds in front of the next team.
