Post-Game Wrap-Up
CLEVELAND, Ohio (Jan. 6, 2011) -
Lindsay Laur posted her school record-tying fifth-straight double-double and Courtney Lindfors added 17 points, but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team fell to Cleveland State, 77-60, Thursday evening at the Wolstein Center.
The Panthers (3-11, 0-3 Horizon) cut the Vikings' (9-5, 2-1 Horizon) 10-point lead down to just two in the second half by shooting over 60 percent from the field up to that point, but then went over 11 minutes without a field goal to fall back down. UWM then could not recover down the stretch.
"I thought our kids gave good effort, their energy was there, and they had good focus. We stayed with them, but they were able to break free at the end," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said. "I thought we did a better job defensively in the second half. We held them in check, but we just couldn't score. Their pressure got to us."
Laur finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds to tie Erica Young's double-double mark of five-straight games. She also tied Young with her 20th career double-double. Sami Tucker joined Laur and Lindfors in double-figures with 10 points.
When Milwaukee's shots were falling, it was an imposing inside presence getting the job done, led by the 6-foot-4 combination of Lindfors and Jenilee Klomstad (seven points). Before the drought, the team had a 28-22 advantage on points in the paint. After the 16:01 mark of the second half, however, it did not get another paint point.
Down 10 points at 51-41 after a Garland layup at the 17:24 mark, the Panthers quickly cut into that lead. Lindfors made it 51-43 with a layup and was followed by back-to-back Kimee Chandler three-pointers. Her second trey made it 51-49 at that fateful 16:01 mark. The Panthers then did not make a field goal for 11:37 as CSU gradually pulled away. They missed 12-straight field goal attempts in that time, turning the ball over 10 times.
Laur broke the string, following a pair of Angela Rodriguez free throws, with back-to-back jumpers to make it just 66-59 at 4:24 before Cleveland State pulled away down the stretch.
UWM finished the game at 42.3 percent, making 3-of-13 from three-point range. The team also finished an uncharacteristic 13-for-23 (.565) at the free throw line. The Panthers did use their size advantage to pull down a 38-34 rebounding advantage, but CSU had 16 boards on the offensive end. Turnovers doomed Milwaukee, as it turned the ball over 24 times, leading to 30 Viking points.
Cleveland State shot 43.9 percent from the field, making 6-of-17 from downtown. CSU also went 13-of-20 at the free throw line, but limited itself to just 13 turnovers.
Shawnita Garland led the way for the home team with 23 points and five steals, while three other Vikings reached double-figures. Takima Keane had 18 points and Shalona Winton (13 points, 12 rebounds) and Janelle Adams (11 points, 10 assists) each had double-doubles.
The Panthers will look to snap a nine-game losing streak, its longest since the 1995-96 season, Saturday at Youngstown State. UWM and YSU tip off at noon central time.
