Post-Game Wrap-Up
GREEN BAY, Wis. (Jan. 22, 2011) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team could not get its offense on track in falling at No. 15/21 Green Bay, 87-39, Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center.
The Panthers (6-12, 3-4 Horizon) could not overcome 29 turnovers and just 22 percent shooting in seeing their three-game winning streak come to an end. The Phoenix (18-1, 7-0 Horizon) had no offensive troubles in keeping its league mark unblemished.
"This was a tough loss. Green Bay just showed what kind of team they are," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "Their aggressiveness really took us out of what we wanted to do. The credit goes to them and the best thing we got out of it was the experience (to build from)."
Lindsay Laur led Milwaukee with 10 points, while Angela Rodriguez scored eight and Sami Tucker was team's next-highest scorer with six points.
Kayla Tetschlag and Lydia Bauer had 20 points apiece for GB, with Tetschlag adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Celeste Hoewisch had 19 points to go with seven steals.
UWM could not get its offense on track the entire game, trailing just 8-5 before a 20-2 Phoenix run effectively put the game out of reach. The Panthers would fall down 42-13 at halftime and never recover. They shot just 19 percent in the opening half and turned the ball over 17 times.
In the second half, Milwaukee did not relent, but could not find its shooting touch. It did fight its way to the free throw line 16 times in the half, accounting for the bulk of its points. The Panthers made just 3-of-17 from three-point range for the game and was 18-for-24 at the free throw line.
Green Bay shot 50.8 percent on the day, forging a 43-24 rebounding advantage and coming away with 18 steals. The Phoenix did commit 17 turnovers, but held a commanding 30-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Milwaukee returns to action at Valparaiso Thursday. The Panthers and Crusaders tip off at 7 p.m. central at the ARC.
