Northern Illinois University jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in handing the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team a 21-6 loss at Ralph McKenzie Field Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies (21-31) scored at least two runs in each of the first six frames in defeating the Panthers (26-23) for the third time in three tries this season.
Senior Ben Long led the offense with three hits, driving in three runs while adding his eighth home run of the season. Sophomore Paul Hoenecke had two hits and scored twice.
The Huskies jumped on junior starter Cuyler Franzke (3-5) for two runs in the first and then tacked on three more in the second to jump out, 5-1, after just two innings.
UWM went through seven pitchers on the day, with seniors Dan Buchholz (1.1 IP) and Nate Caldwell (2.0 IP) each getting their first appearance of the season in the contest.
Alex Jones led NIU at the plate with three of its 19 hits on the day. Kyle Glancy (3-3) picked up the win with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Milwaukee finishes the regular season at home this week, welcoming Youngstown State to Henry Aaron Field for three games that will be crucial in UWM's final place in the league standings. Action gets underway with a single game Thursday, set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
