MILWAUKEE, Wis. (March 6, 2010) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team held Youngstown State to less than 20 percent shooting and just 39 points in handing the Penguins a 73-39 loss Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (11-18, 6-12 Horizon) set a school record by limiting YSU to just 19.4 percent shooting and held a team to less than 40 points for the first time since 2002. Meanwhile, the Penguins ended the regular season winless (0-29, 0-18 Horizon).

"It was a great way to finish out the regular season," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said. "We had been struggling, confidence-wise, and we just played an all-around great team game. Defensively, we set some goals for ourselves and we met those goals. It's a great time to get some momentum going."

UWM returns to action Monday in the first round of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship. The Panthers finished in a three-way tie for seventh with Wright State and Valparaiso. Based on tiebreakers, Milwaukee will play as the ninth seed at No. 8 Valpo Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sophomore Amanda Viehauser led Milwaukee with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. She reset career-bests in the first half, alone, with 16 points and nine boards. Junior Lindsay Laur was the only other UWM player in double-figures with 12 points, adding eight rebounds to join the program's 500-rebound club.

Brandi Brown had 12 points, 16 rebounds and seven steals for the Penguins. Kaitlyn March chipped in 11 points, while two others scored six points apiece.

With the game tied at 5-5, the Panthers started to steadily pull away, going on a 14-4 run. YSU responded to pull within for just a 20-16 deficit, before Milwaukee went on a 12-4 run to effectively seal the game in the first half. Viehauser scored her team's last 12 points of the half as it went into intermission leading 35-23.

In the second half, it was all UWM, as the Panthers shot 61.5 percent from the field and built their lead as high as 36 in the final minute. They scored 11 of the first 13 points of the half and held the Penguins without a field goal for stretches of 10:46 and 6:29. Milwaukee rattled off a late 15-0 run that lasted until the final moments of regulation.

The Panthers finished the game shooting 48.3 percent from the field and dominated the rebounding category, 57-39. With the return of Viehauser and junior Jenilee Klomstad to the lineup, they were able to pound the ball inside to the tune of a 40-10 advantage on points in the paint and 22 second-chance points.

Klomstad played just eight minutes in her first game since Jan. 9, but tallied six points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Junior Ashley Imperiale had 12 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Youngstown State was just 13-of-67 from the field and 4-of-26 from three-point range for the game. The Penguins also converted just 9-of-20 free throws. They did force 22 UWM turnovers and came away with 15 steals, but converted just 13 points off turnovers.
