GREEN BAY, Wis. (March 10, 2010) - Green Bay had three players score 15-or-more points and ended the game on a 26-9 run to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team, 72-48, in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship Wednesday evening at the Kress Center.

The ninth-seed Panthers saw their season send at 12-19, while the top-seeded Phoenix (27-3) moves on to the semifinals to face No. 4 Cleveland State Friday.

"I'm proud of our kids' effort," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "They were in it to win it and came out and had a great first half. We made a good run in the second half, but then I felt like we got mentally fatigued and that was it."

Senior Jodie McClain put together a strong all-around performance in her final collegiate game. She led Milwaukee with 10 points, five assists and five steals. She finished the year with 150 assists, making her just the second Panther in school history to tally 150 assists in a season.

Freshman Sami Tucker scored eight points to go with five rebounds, while sophomore Danielle Jorgenson had seven points and six boards.

Celeste Hoewisch led Green Bay with 15 points, six assists and six steals. Kayla Tetschlag had 16 points and nine rebounds and Sarah Eichler chipped in 15 points.

The Panthers came out in a zone and seemed to stifle the Phoenix in the opening half, forcing the home team into outside shots and an uncharacteristic 13 turnovers. Green Bay led much of the frame by hitting seven three-pointers on 15 attempts, but was just 3-of-12 inside the arc.

Milwaukee was trailing 33-26 at halftime.

In the second half, GB was able to adjust and get its inside game going and started to pull away. The Panthers surrendered the first eight points of the half, but chipped away at the deficit and was back within seven points as late as the 12:20 mark of the second half at 46-39.

The Phoenix then closed the game on a 26-9 run, holding Milwaukee without a field goal over the final 5:40 of regulation and building its lead as high as 26.

UWM shot 37.8 percent for the game, turning the ball over 25 times. The Panthers attempted just 10 three-pointers, making three. Green Bay finished at 45.5 percent shooting for the game, making 11 three-pointers on 25 attempts. GB did turn the ball over 22 times, but won the battle of the boards 36-28 with 17 on the offensive glass.
