JONESBORO, Ark. -
Todd Baumgartner hit a grand slam to break open a 2-2 tie and send Arkansas State University to an 8-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Field. The Panthers (0-4) quickly overcame an early hole, only to see the Red Wolves (6-1) turn the momentum and earn the weekend sweep. Milwaukee had its chances, pounding out 14 hits in the game but leaving 13 runners on base.
Senior Dan Buchholz started the Panthers scoring, pounding a solo home run to left to lead off the second inning. Junior Cole Kraft followed later with a two-out run-scoring double to tie the contest at 2-2. The tie was short-lived, however, as Baumgartner cleared the bases with the home run to left center a half inning later.
Buchholz also provided UWM with its other run, hitting his second home run of the game in the sixth inning. He led the offense with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Seniors Shaun Wegner (2-for-3) and Tim Patzman (2-for-4) and sophomore Paul Hoenecke (2-for-5) all came through with more then one hit on the afternoon.
Junior Chad Pierce (0-1) suffered the loss in his first appearance, surrendering six earned runs in 5.0 innings, striking out two while walking six.
Milwaukee continues its early season road trip with a midweek visit to Minneapolis for a game against the University of Minnesota. The Panthers and Golden Gophers will play a 6:35 p.m. contest Wednesday, March 3, in the Metrodome.
