Post-Game Wrap-Up
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Dec. 4, 2010) -
Lindsay Laur scored a game-high 19 points and eclipsed 1,000 career points, but it was not enough, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team fell to Northern Iowa, 72-58, Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
UWM (3-4) fell down by as many as 19 in the first half before rallying, but could get no closer than five late in regulation. UNI (4-3) drained seven first-half three-pointers and made its final eight free throw attempts to hold off the home Panthers.
"It's hard to lose at home, but we just didn't put 40 minutes together," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said. "We had good stretches, good spurts where we played some good basketball, but it was not enough. We just had too many mental breakdowns defensively and our shots weren't falling. We had good looks that we just couldn't knock down."
In addition to her 19 points, Laur added eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Milwaukee. She became the 16th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone and did so in her 99th career game. That is 10th-fastest to the mark in school history. The Roseville, Minn., native was also just one point from her fourth-straight 20-point outing.
Courtney Lindfors was the only other UWM player in double-figures with 10 points and two blocks, while Jenilee Klomstad was one of three others with seven to go with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Milwaukee native Lizzie Boeck led UNI with 17 points and eight rebounds. Katelin Oney chipped in 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Erin Brocka scored 11.
Northern Iowa hit five of its first eight 3-point attempts, and 9-of-18 from the field, to build a 23-8 lead out of the gates. The visiting Panthers' lead would peak at 33-14 with 4:13 remaining in the half before UWM got its offense on track. Milwaukee was three for its first 14, but closed the first half on a 9-2 run to head into the locker room trailing by just 12 at 35-23.
Sami Tucker started the run with a layup and Laur hit back-to-back jumpers. After a Rachel Madrigal jumper for the visitors, Sammy Theut converted a three-point play just before halftime.
Northern's lead would peak at 15 early in the second half, but Milwaukee whittled the lead down to five. During the extended run, Laur hit the 1,000-point mark with a putback in transition that make it 47-39. She later hit a three-pointer and followed with a layup to make it 56-51 with 6:56 to play.
The eight-minute media timeout came shortly thereafter and Northern Iowa emerged from the stoppage and pulled away down the stretch. From that point on, the visiting Panthers went 6-of-7 from the field and made their final eight free throw attempts. They would end the game on a 16-7 run to provide for the final tally.
Milwaukee finished the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field, including a frigid 2-of-12 from three-point range. The team did find success at the free throw line, making 12-of-14, including four "And 1" opportunities. After struggling on the boards for much of the first half, UWM took control and finished with a final 36-34 rebounding advantage. The team had 15 offensive boards for 14 second-chance points.
The home Panthers also committed just 15 turnovers, but saw the visitors turn them into 14 points.
UNI shot 47.5 percent from the field, making 8-of-22 from three point range, but just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc after halftime. Northern committed 13 turnovers, its average, while dishing out 20 assists.
UWM hits the road for four-straight games to close out the non-league slate. The Panthers kick off the trip at No. 25 Michigan State Wednesday. The teams tip off at 6 p.m. central time.
