Post-Game Wrap-Up
NORMAL, Ill. (Dec. 28, 2010) -
Lindsay Laur had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Amanda Viehauser made her season debut with 13 points and five rebounds, but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team lost its sixth-straight game with a 76-69 loss to Illinois State Tuesday evening at Redbird Arena.
The Panthers (3-8) made a furious comeback for the third-straight game, cutting a 16-point deficit to just four late in regulation, but it was not enough as the Redbirds (7-3) pulled away down the stretch.
"We were just off (tonight)," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "Mentally, we are an inconsistent team with a confidence issue. Playing these last four games on the road, we get into these moments where we're not playing right or with confidence. The times that happens affects us on our execution on offense."
Anne Breland also scored in double-figures for Milwaukee, tallying 14 points and three steals.
Emily Hanley led Illinois State with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Amanda Clifton and Kate Broadway had 11 points apiece. Four more Redbird players scored either seven or eight points in a balanced effort.
ISU led for the majority of the game and saw its lead go as high as 16 at 55-39 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Breland then hit a three and, after a Clifton jumper, UWM scored the next 10 points of the game. Broadway ended the run with a jumper, but Breland answered with another three to make it 59-55 with 7:44 to play.
The deficit would be four again at 61-57, but the Redbirds rattled off a 13-2 run to put the game out of reach. The home team's lead would reach 15 at 74-59, but the Panthers responded down the stretch with a 10-1 run to provide for the final score.
Milwaukee shot just over 37 percent and had nine turnovers in each half to finish at 37.3 percent for the game with 18 turnovers. It wasn't the number of turnovers that seemed to haunt the Panthers, but the timing that hounded them. They did overcome a 22-12 rebounding deficit at halftime to concede a slight 42-41 edge by game's end. UWM finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds.
The Redbirds shot a blistering 60 percent in the first half, but the Panther defense forced them into 16 turnovers in the half. They cooled off in the second half, shooting just 36.4 percent, but offset that with just three turnovers after halftime. ISU finished the game shooting 47.6 percent.
Neither team had much success from three-point range, as UWM went 6-for-27 and Illinois State 5-for-18. Milwaukee fared better from the charity stripe, converting on 13-of-16 free throws. State was just 11-for-20.
The Panthers return to action Friday, opening up Horizon League play against Wright State at the Klotsche Center. UWM and WSU tip off at 1 p.m. in a New Year's Eve matinee.
