Post-Game Wrap-Up

MADISON, Wis. (Dec. 12, 2010) - Wisconsin outscored the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team, 34-8, in the paint to cancel out a season-high 11 UWM three-pointers and hand the Panthers a 68-53 loss Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center.

Breland led Milwaukee (3-6) with a career-high 17 points, burying five 3-pointers, but it was not enough as the Badgers (4-7) got the ball inside time and time again to keep fending off the UWM attack.

"(Wisconsin's) inside game was the difference. (Lin) Zastrow and Tara Steinbauer, we didn't have an answer for them," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "We have a lot of growing pains. Milwaukee just has to play more consistent basketball. You saw a lot of great runs, but we need to be able to sustain our runs, be more disciplined and more disciplined on both ends of the court."

The Panthers, who lost for the fourth-straight game, made 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) three-point attempts, but were a paltry 8-for-29 (27.6 percent) inside the arc. They also got to the free throw line just five times in the game, making four. Milwaukee also conceded a sizable 38-23 edge on the boards, getting just six offensive boards.

Wisconsin shot 49 percent for the game, making just 5-of-20 from three-point range. Zastrow and Steinbauer led the charge, with 17 points apiece, while Zastrow had 10 rebounds and Steinbauer nine. UW also had more success getting to the charity stripe, making 15-of-17 free throw attempts despite being a 66.2 percent free throw team coming into the game.

Angela Rodriguez also reached double-figures for UWM, adding 14 points. Sami Tucker scored eight points and Lindsay Laur was held to single-digits for the first time this season with seven.

The teams went at each other to start the game, with Milwaukee not scoring until after the first media timeout, but then rattling off an 11-2 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Badgers responded with 11-straight points, but the Panthers later led 24-23 on a Rodriguez jumper with 2:53 to play in the first half.

After that, UWM did not make another field goal for 9:43 of game play, allowing Wisconsin to go on a decisive 17-4 run to take a 40-28 lead. Milwaukee missed 10-consecutive shots and turned the ball over for times in that stretch.

Breland snapped the streak with a three-pointer at 13:10 and proceeded to score the game's next eight points on her own, getting the Panthers within three at 42-39 with what was an 11-2 Breland run. She hit three 3's in that stretch to pull Milwaukee within a possession.

Steinbauer responded, keying a 10-3 run to put the game out of reach at 56-44 with 5:58 remaining in the game. She scored the first six points of the run and capped it with a layup. The Panthers would get no closer than seven down the stretch.

UWM was successful protecting the ball, dishing out 14 assists against a season-low 13 turnovers. The team also forced UW into 16 turnovers, including eight on steals. Breland had a team-high three steals and Tucker tallied two.

Milwaukee gets a week off before returning to action next Sunday at Toledo. The Panthers and Rockets tip off at 1 p.m.
