Post-Game Wrap-Up
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Nov. 21, 2010) -
Lindsay Laur scored 24 points and made all 15 of her free throw tries to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 58-53 win over South Dakota in the consolation game of the Subway Classic Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena.
The Panthers (2-2) overcame their worst shooting game in five years, and third-worst in school history, to knock off the Coyotes (2-3) and claim third place at the Subway Classic.
"Who would have thought that you would have shot 22 percent, you would have gotten a victory," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "Our players hung tough and found a way to win--20 offensive boards. I thought Laur really carried us--15-for-15 at the free throw line. We grinded it out and got another victory. We'll take it. This is a young team, this is great experience for them. They were resilient and this was a nice victory."
Laur, who had a team-best 14 points Saturday, was named to the Subway Classic All-Tournament Team. Her 15-for-15 free throw performance tied a school record for free throw percentage (1.000) and was the second-most made free throws in a perfect shooting game in school history (18-for-18).
Angela Rodriguez added 10 points, while Anne Breland scored nine points and Courtney Lindfors seven.
Tempett Wilson led USD with 14 points, with three players total reaching double-digits in scoring. Annie Roche contributed 11 points and Stacia Robertson had 10.
Milwaukee shot 28-for-31 (90.3 percent) at the free throw line to offset 22 percent shooting for the game. After halftime, the Panthers made just three field goals, but attempted 26 free throws, making 23. They did dominate the boards, 53-40, and turned the ball over a season-low 14 times.
Laur and Lindfors led the rebounding charge with nine apiece. Rodriguez and Tucker each had seven.
It looked as though UWM's cold shooting would be too much to overcome for the second game in a row. But, the Panthers caught fire in the first half when they needed it most, overcoming a 23-16 deficit with a 12-2 run to take a 28-25 lead.
South Dakota would score the final five points of the half to take a 30-28 lead into halftime. Fortunately for Milwaukee, the Coyotes did not make a field goal for over five minutes to start the second frame, allowing the Panthers to score the first eight points of the half and take the lead for good at 36-30.
The Panthers did not make a field goal after the 8:09 mark of the game, but were 13-for-14 from the free throw line in that time to seal the game. Ten of Laur's free throws came during this stretch.
The Coyotes did not fair too much better from the field, shooting at a 32.3 percent clip. They were 5-of-20 from three-point range and 8-for-14 at the free throw line. USD did block eight shots, led by seven from Jodie Boss. Her figure tied a Milwaukee record for blocks by an opponent.
UWM returns to action just after Thanksgiving, hosting Western Illinois Saturday at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers and Leathernecks tip off at 2 p.m.
