MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Jan. 16, 2010) -
Junior Lindsay Laur posted her sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds and junior Ashley Imperiale added 16 points, but the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team could not overcome 26 turnovers in falling to No. 17 Green Bay, 74-53, Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers (6-10, 1-4 Horizon) have now lost four-straight league games for the first time since February of 1998. The Phoenix (16-0, 5-0 Horizon) turned those turnovers into 32 points to continue its undefeated run to start the season.
"We came out of the games strong and played with them (early)," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "I was worried how we'd come out of the blocks. The success that they've had, they do such a good job of coming out early and really setting the pace and setting the tone. The fact that we were able to come out, match their intensity, match baskets and take a lead was really encouraging."
Laur was 7-of-10 from the field and Imperiale shot 6-of-12 as the duo handled the bulk of Milwaukee's offense in the game. Freshman Sami Tucker was the team's next highest scorer, tallying six points to go with five rebounds in her first collegiate start.
Green Bay got a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double from Julie Wojta and a 17-point performance from Kayla Tetschlag. Celeste Hoewisch added 13 points and Heather Golden nine in the winning effort.
A 17-6 run in the first half put the Phoenix in control and it never looked back. The Panthers came out of the gate aggressively, never letting the visitors out of their sights. They led 17-16 on the fifth lead change of the early going after a 7-0 run. Green Bay answered with 17-6 run of its own to take the lead for good, a run that included Tetschlag's first 12 points of the game.
Milwaukee trailed 37-27 at halftime and came out aggressive in the second half, pulling within eight on two occasions in the first minutes of the half. GB then rattled off a 16-2 run to break the Panthers' back and put the game out of reach.
UWM turned the ball over 13 times in each half to negate what was a strong shooting game at 45.5 percent. It did hit just 2-of-12 three-point attempts and was 11-of-15 from the free throw line. The Phoenix shot 43.3 percent and was an uncharacteristic 5-of-19 from three-point range and 19-of-29 from the charity stripe.
GB won the battle of the boards, 34-28, including 15 offensive boards for 16 second-chance points. It also turned the ball over just 13 times.
Milwaukee returns to action on the road, with a two-game road trip through Chicago. The Panthers take on UIC Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
