MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Derek McCallum drove in six runs and finished a double short of batting for the cycle to lead the University of Minnesota to a 12-2 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team Tuesday afternoon at Siebert Field. The Panthers (12-18) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, only to see the 23rd-ranked Golden Gophers (21-11) respond with five unanswered runs to take control.

UWM struck quickly, as sophomore Cole Kraft and senior Andy Gerhartz started the game with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with nobody out. An RBI-fielder's choice from sophomore Doug Dekoning plated a run, but that was all the team would get.

Minnesota jumped right back into the lead in the bottom of the inning on McCallum's two-run home run. The Gophers would plate two more in the second and one in the fourth to lead 5-1.

Milwaukee had a nice opportunity in the fifth, but could only plate one run. The Panthers loaded the bases on two hits and a walk, as seniors Shawn Wozniak and Johann Andes each singled to start it, followed by a walk by Kraft.

That brought on a pitching change and Gerhartz followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. However, the rally would end there with a strikeout and line out to first base

Minnesota, ranked as high as No. 23 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, then put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.

Wozniak and junior Shaun Wegner led the offense with two hits, as the Panthers had their streak of consecutive games with 10 or more hits snapped at seven, finishing with eight in the contest. Sophomore Cuyler Franzke (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs in 3.0 innings. Five other Milwaukee pitchers appeared in the game.

UWM gets no rest, returning to Milwaukee this evening before welcoming Wisconsin Lutheran College to Henry Aaron Field Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.
