DAYTON, Ohio (Dec. 4, 2009) -
No. 24/25 Dayton ended the first half on a 35-4 run and held the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team over 10 minutes without a field goal in rolling to an 86-52 win Friday evening at UD Arena.
The Panthers (4-3) shot just 24 percent in the opening half and hit just one field goal after the 10:39 mark of the period, while the Flyers (7-1) shot better than 70 percent for much of the half to head into halftime with a 56-19 lead.
"Dayton is one of the strongest teams in the country and it showed," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "They came out of the blocks hard and really took it at us and we had a hard time responding to it. They took us completely out of our game, offensively and defensively, we didn't execute. I felt like we were in a fog."
Freshman Sami Tucker led UWM with career-highs of 12 points and nine rebounds. Juniors Ashley Imperiale and Stephanie Schell added eight points apiece. Schell also had two 3-pointers and four assists in her season debut after missing the first six games with a broken hand.
Kendel Ross led five Flyers in double-figures, scoring 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-4 from three-point range. Justine Raterman and Brittany Wilson had 11 points apiece and Elle Queen and Kayla Moss had 10 points each.
Dayton scored the first seven points of the game, but Milwaukee looked to keep it close, answering with four points to make it 7-4. The Flyers then began to pull away and never look back. They led by as many as 40 in the first half and finished the half shooting 59 percent after cooling off in the waning minutes of the period.
UWM also had 17 turnovers in the first half, leading to 24 Flyer points.
Milwaukee rebounded a bit in the second half, shooting 45.5 percent in the frame, but was never able to cut the deficit under 30 points. The Panthers finished at 36.2 percent from the field, hitting on 4-of-16 three-pointers. They, unfortunately, turned the ball over a season-high 32 times.
The Flyers finished at 48.6 percent for the game, cooling off to 35.5 percent in the second half. They shot 6-of-16 from three-point range, but made just 12-of-24 from the free throw line. Dayton gained sizeable advantages on points in the paint, 44-20, points off turnovers, 33-12, second-chance points, 16-8, and fast break points, 21-4.
Botham mixed up her lineup in the second half, getting Tucker and Schell 33 minutes combined in the half. Every player that dressed for the game played at least three minutes.
The Panthers return to action Dec. 10, playing at Northern Iowa. UWM and UNI tip off at 7 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
