SEATTLE, Wash. (Nov. 29, 2009) -
Ashley Brown scored 23 points and Seattle University rattled off a 25-5 run late in the second half to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team a 68-63 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Connolly Center in the final game of the SeattleU Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Panthers (4-2) led by as many as nine in each half, but saw the Redhawks (1-7) turn a 49-40 UWM lead turned into a 65-54 deficit down the stretch.
"Give all the credit to Seattle, they came out with their eye on the prize," UWM head coach Sandy Botham said. "They came out very aggressive, their intensity was strong and we had a hard time matching it. We knew they were a three-point shooting team, but they shot the ball extremely well and it made it hard for us to gain any sort of momentum."
Junior Ashley Imperiale scored 22 points for Milwaukee, while junior Lindsay Laur was the team's only other player in double-figures with her second-straight double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Amanda Viehauser finished with nine points for the second-straight game and junior Anne Breland tallied eight.
Seattle knocked down 14 three-pointers to carry the offensive baggage. Brown finished with five, while Maggie McCarthy chipped in three on her way to 14 points and Samantha Messersmith dropped three of her own for nine.
Milwaukee overcame a 32-23 halftime deficit rather quickly, opening the second half on a 26-8 run to take a 49-40 lead. Unfortunately, the Redhawks then rattled off 10-straight points. The game was tied at 53-53 for the final time, before Brown outscored the Panthers on her own, 12-1, to make it 65-54 with 1:43 to play. In that time, UWM went 4:39 without a field goal.
The Panthers shot 40.3 percent from the field for the game, hitting 9-of-26 from three-point range. They turned the ball over just three times in the second half to finish with a season-low 14 for the second-straight game.
The Redhawks had struggled on offense in dropping their first seven games, but shot 45.5 percent for the game and made 14-of-30 three-point tries. They also committed 14 turnovers.
Milwaukee struggled on offense in the first half, shooting just 32 percent and turning the ball over 11 times to fall down by nine points at halftime. They did hold a 16-8 lead before Seattle rattled off a 24-7 run to take control of the game at that point.
Seattle buried eight 3-pointers in the opening half, while attempting just 12 inside the arc.
UWM continues a stretch of four-straight games on the road Friday, heading to Ohio to take on Dayton.
