CLEVELAND, Ohio -
Liz Fazio had 13 kills and Beth Greulich added 11 as Cleveland State captured a 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday night at Woodling Gymnasium.
Natalie Schmitting had 12 kills for Milwaukee, which hit just .083 and committed 26 hitting errors.
Maddie Sueppel contributed nine kills and Jena Berg eight for the Panthers (5-13, 2-5 Horizon), while Lauren Felsing led the UWM defensive efforts with 13 digs.
Cleveland State (17-5, 6-1), meanwhile, hit a solid .234 and controlled play in each of the first two sets before pulling out a tight win in the third frame.
"Cleveland State is a good team and they were very steady throughout the match," UWM head coach Susie Johnson said. "We have to limit our errors. We have the ability to be so much better on offense, and Kellye has really done a nice job lately of running the offense. But we have to continue to work on increasing our production and limiting the amount of points we give to the other team on errors."
Milwaukee held a 10-8 lead in the first set before being overwhelmed by a big Cleveland State surge. The Vikings took the lead for good at 11-10 in a kill by K`ara Koch and eventually built their lead out to 18-11 following a service ace. UWM would never get closer than six points after that.
Cleveland State jumped on UWM in the second set, bolting out to an 11-5 lead. The advantage grew as large as seven before a Panther run brought Milwaukee within 22-19. A CSU error kept UWM within 23-20 but a kill by Greulich and a block by Greulich and Amy Benz put the Vikings in control of the match.
UWM fell behind 8-4 in the third set but rallied to tie things at 15 on a solo block by Sueppel. The Panthers then built a 19-16 lead after a kill by Sueppel and still led 20-18 after a CSU error. Milwaukee's final lead came at 23-22 following a kill by Berg, but two kills by Greulich sandwiched around a UWM error allowed the Vikings to wrap up the match.
UWM wraps up its weekend road swing to Ohio with a Sunday afternoon contest at Wright State.
