MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 14, 2008) -
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee head women's basketball coach Sandy Botham will be inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame, the club announced Friday.
Botham will be inducted alongside Ed Nuttycombe, Wayne "Knobby' Kelliher, and Glenn Borland on Wednesday, June 4, at the Induction Ceremony and Dinner at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center.
"It's a great honor," Botham said. "I have a lot of people to thank for an honor like this. I have been very fortunate in my life to have mentors like my parents, sisters and family, as well as coaches who have shaped me into the person I am today--Peg Mueller in high school and Muffet McGraw at Notre Dame."
A native of Madison, Wis., Botham was a three-sport star at Madison West in the early 1980s. She was all-state in basketball, volleyball, and softball, and her teams went to state in each sport. The Regents basketball team won the 1982 Division I State title. She went on to an all-conference basketball career at Notre Dame and still ranks among the school's top-10 in a number of categories.
Botham went into coaching and was head coach at Beloit College for one season, guiding the Buccaneers to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. For the past 11 seasons she has been the head coach at UWM, guiding the Panthers to two Horizon League championships and a pair of NCAA Tournaments. Then, this season, she became the winningest coach in league history with 129 career league victories.
Tickets for the event will go on sale beginning April 29 at a cost of $40. The event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend and salute this exceptional group of inductees. Contact Hap Johnson at (608) 836-9426 for tickets.
The Madison Sports Hall of Fame was started in 1963 to recognize and honor the great athletes and sports figures from Madison. The club hosts weekly meetings from August through June and holds the induction ceremony every June. There are more than 150 members.
