Panthers Drop 1-0 Exhibition Decision To No. 20 Illinois

Box Score

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Aug. 26, 2007) - Jordan Hilbrands scored in the 19th minute and No. 20 Illinois shut down the Panther offense to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in its exhibition finale Sunday afternoon in Champaign.

Chichi Nweke got the game-winning play started with a through ball behind the Milwaukee defense. Hilbrands then had a 1v1 with goalkeeper Erin Kane. Kane came off her line and went low when Hilbrands chipped the ball over her from the top of the 18-yard box into the goal for the score.

Despite being outshot 16-4, the Panther offense was able to get forward with numbers throughout the game. UWM was just unable to break through for the equalizing score. The Fighting Illinois also won the corner kick category, 11-2. The Milwaukee defense was up to the task, limiting the threat of the 11 corners.

Freshman Nicole Sperl had the team's best opportunity just over three minutes into the second half. Senior Amanda Winn played a ball to her at the top of the box. Sperl struck the pass on goal, but right at the Illini keeper.

Kane played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves. Meanwhile, Alexandra Kapicki and Lindsey Carstens each played a half for UI, with Carstens making both Illinois saves.

Every available player played for the Panthers, who were missing five players to injury.

Milwaukee opens the 2007 season Friday, Aug. 29, hosting Indiana State in the opening game of the Milwaukee Cup. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
