AMES, Iowa (Dec. 2, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team shot just 24.6 percent and Iowa State had three players in double figures as the Panthers fell to the Cyclones, 85-48, Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.

UWM could not find its shooting touch all day, hitting on just 14 of its 57 field goal tries on the day. Meanwhile, Iowa State shot 46.7 percent after a 52.7 percent clip in the second half.

"I had a lot to learn from Bill (Fennelly) at Notre Dame, and I still do now," Milwaukee head coach Sandy Botham said of her former position coach in college. "His team really executes well. They are a well-oiled machine and you are not going to win if you can't score."

Sophomore Traci Edwards led the Panthers (3-6) with 13 points and eight rebounds, while sophomores Turquoise McCain added nine points and Kim Wypiszynski nine.

Forward Nicky Wieben scored a game-high 19 points for the Cyclones (5-1), who had 38 points in the paint. Rachel Pieson added 12 and Toccara Rice contributed 10.

"We knew how deadly they could be outside. We saw them as an outside-inside team and focused on defending the three-pointer," Botham said. "They have a number of post go-to players. They have three different players that can be down on the block. When one leaves the game, another comes in."

Milwaukee did finish with just 14 turnovers and was 14-of-19 from the free throw line. The Cyclones held a 46-33 rebounding advantage and 38-14 edge in points in the paint. They also got to the free throw line 26 times, converting 23 attempts.

"Iowa State did a nice job on Traci and our young post players," Botham said. "They doubled Traci and got to her early. Katie Fournier was another young player who is still gaining experience."

Neither team had much luck on offense out of the gates. UWM hit on one of its first 11 shot attempts, while the Cyclones started out just 2-of-10. Iowa State reversed the trend, going inside and finishing the half at 41.9 percent with 20 points in the paint. The Panthers, however, couldn't their shooting woes, finishing at 24.1 percent for the half.

The Cyclones used a number of runs to slowly inch its lead into double-digits. With the score tied at 2-2, they went on an 8-1 run to make it 10-3. Shortly after, an 11-3 ISU run made it 23-10 with 7:46 to go in the half.

The home team would then push its lead to 17 points at 39-22 on a three-pointer by Heather Ezell at the 1:59 mark. A pair of free throws by sophomore Emily Markert cut it to a 39-24 deficit at halftime for the Panthers.

Both teams got to the free throw line in the first half, with Milwaukee making 7-of-11 attempts and ISU hitting on 10-of-12. Outside of the arc, both teams made three tries, with UWM taking eight more attempts (16-8).

Iowa State used a 19-2 run early in the second half to put the game out of reach. UWM had matched the Cyclones point-for-point to start the period and cut its deficit to 45-32 on a three-pointer by Edwards. Then ISU rattled off 10-straight points and, after an Emily Markert layup, nine more points for its first 30-point lead of the game at 64-34 with 8:10 remaining.

The Panthers are in action next Thursday, Dec. 7, hosting Air Force at the Klotsche Center. The game will be broadcast live in Milwaukee on WMLW and begin at 7 p.m.
