MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Nov. 19, 2006) - Four players scored in double-digits and the Panthers shot 60 percent from the field as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 65-56 victory over Central Connecticut State Sunday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.

Sophomore Emily Markert scored a team-high 12 points for UWM (1-3), which was playing its first home game of the season. Sophomore Kim Wypiszynski added 10 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Traci Edwards and junior Meredith Onson each scored 10 in limited action.

Gabriella Guegbelet scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (0-3) as Central's only player in double-figures.

With three games in four days, UWM head coach Sandy Botham played all 15 players that dressed for the game, while no starter played over 24 minutes.

"It was good to be home and to get our first victory of the season," Botham said. "With three games in four days, our goal was to get a lot of players into the game and give those that have been playing a lot of minutes for us a rest going into tomorrow's contest against Wisconsin."

UWM focused on high-percentage shots, scoring 36 points in the paint, and hitting on 66.7 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half. The Panthers also had a slim 30-29 rebound margin, while posting a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the second-straight game. Milwaukee dished out a season-high 21 assists, but did commit 18 turnovers.

"Our goal coming into the game was actually to shoot 52 percent. We knew we were going to be looking for those inside shots," Botham said. "We played the game inside and outside, which allowed us to head-hunt for higher percentage shots."

On the defensive end, Milwaukee limited the Blue Devils to just 36 percent shooting. CCSU did force 12 steals, but had 16 miscues of their own.

The Panthers never trailed building its lead to eight midway through the opening half. Their lead would reach as high as 10 on a number of occasions before taking an eight-point lead into halftime at 31-23.

A 7-1 run just over seven minutes into the second half put the game out of reach at 47-35 on a Markert three-pointer with 10:22 to play. CCSU was able to cut the lead to six at 52-46, before UWM once again pulled away. Senior Aubrey Hampton hit a three-pointer inside the final three minutes to give the Panthers a game-high 13-point lead at 63-50.

Milwaukee has a short turnaround, playing Wisconsin Monday in Madison. The game has a 7 p.m. tip-off time and will be televised live on Fox Sports North.
