TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 10, 2006) -
All-American candidate Jessica Dickson scored a game-high 29 points as South Florida rolled past the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team, 85-59, Friday night in Tampa, Fla. It was the season opener for both teams.
Sophomore Traci Edwards scored 20 points to lead the Panthers (0-1), while senior Aubrey Hampton was the only other player in double-figures with 13 points. She hit on 3 three-pointers and dished out three assists.
Dickson was 12-of-19 from the field in 26 minutes of action before fouling out. Shantia Grace added 21 points and seven assists for the Bulls (1-0), who were an NCAA Tournament team last season.
Milwaukee jumped out to an eight-point lead midway through the first half, but USF then rattled off a 22-3 to take control of the game. The Bulls led by 12 at halftime, at 41-29, and by as many as 29 in the final minute of the game to coast to victory.
The Panthers hit on 50 percent of their three-point attempts (8-16), but shot just 42.2 percent from the field, 52 percent from the free throw line and committed 21 turnovers. South Florida, meanwhile, shot 50.8 percent from the field and hit on 19-of-22 free throws. The Bulls also held the 39-28 rebound advantage and blocked six shots.
UWM was in control of the game early, building an eight-point lead at 21-13 just before the midway point of the first half. The Panthers led for the majority of the early minutes, but, after falling down 13-12, they rattled off nine-straight points. Edwards hit a lay up and junior Meredith Onson followed with a three-pointer. Edwards then hit another lay up, but was fouled and hit the ensuing free throw.
Onson added nine points and four assists for Milwaukee, while junior Dana Schultz collected a team-best five assists.
Milwaukee's trip through Florida continues, as the Panthers take on Miami Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for noon in Coral Gables.
