May 8, 2005

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Wright State broke open a 1-0 game with 15 runs after the fourth inning to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team, 15-1, in the series finale Sunday evening at Miller Park. The Panthers (20-23, 11-5 Horizon) had won the first three game of their series with the Raiders (19-25, 8-8 Horizon).

Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but saw its offense falter the rest of the game. Junior Mike Goetz reached on an error and stole second to lead off the frame. He scored on junior Joe Nowicki's two-out single.

Panther starter Rick Cavaiani (2-7) was rolling along with a one-hitter through four innings before WSU struck for four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Cavaiani lasted into the sixth inning, surrendering six earned runs and striking out six, while walking none.

Brian Vickers hit a solo home run to start a seven-run rally in the sixth. Wright State pushed its lead to 11-1 after six innings, benefiting from four UWM errors in the frame. WSU added two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings to provide for the 15-1 final.

UWM finished with five hits, as five different Panthers collected base knocks. Vickers finished with four hits for the visitors, while Brian Shoup drove in five runs on the day.

Milwaukee returns to action Tuesday against Western Michigan. The Panthers and Broncos are set to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
