Panther Baseball Swept In Twinbill At Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa pitchers held the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to eight hits and three runs in sweeping the Panthers in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa. UWM (17-22) mustered just two hits in a game one 5-1 loss, before falling to the host Hawkeyes (21-22), 8-2, in game two.

In the day's second game, Milwaukee tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before Iowa struck for two runs in the fifth and four unearned scores in the sixth to provide for the final 8-2 margin.

After an unearned run in the bottom of the first, UWM tied the game when sophomore Rob Brockel scored on a wild pitch in the second. After Brockel reached on an error, sophomore Ross McCoy put Brockel on third with a double to right center.

Brockel drove in the team's other run in the fourth inning. Senior Charlie Reschke stroked and two-out double and scored on Brockel's single to tie the game at 2-2. At the plate, Brockel led the way with two of the team's six hits, while three of the other four went for doubles.

Sophomore Mike Rauwerdink (0-4) threw five strong innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and no walks. Juniors Korey Keller and Jed Dolske combined to throw the final inning, allowing four unearned runs in the final frame.

Despite not getting a hit until the fifth inning, UWM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one. Senior Brooks Graff was hit by a pitch with one out in the first inning before junior Zak Rivera and sophomore Nick Wichser walked to load the bases. Reschke drove in Graff when he was hit by another pitch.

The Hawkeyes tied the game after two batters in the third and took the lead at 3-1 by the end of the frame. Skyler Moss led off with a double and scored on Andy Lytle's single. Two batters later, Dusty Napoleon hit another double, scoring Lytle. Luis Andrulonis added another RBI single in the inning.

Junior Rick Cavaiani (2-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs in four innings of work. The righthander also struck out three compared to no walks.

Despite just two hits, the Panthers did draw seven walks and were hit by five pitches in the first game. Junior Joe Nowicki broke up a no-hit bid with a one-out single in the fifth inning, while the team's other base knock came from McCoy to lead off the sixth.

Milwaukee returns to action with a four-game league series against Wright State this weekend (May 6-8). The Panthers and Raiders open things on Friday with a single game at Henry Aaron Field at 7 p.m., before a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Sunday's finale will be played at Miller Park at approximately 5 p.m., following the Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Mets at 1:05 p.m.
