May 27, 2005

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Junior Korey Keller threw a four-hit shutout to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team to a 4-0 win over Wright State Friday afternoon at the Horizon League Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. The Panthers move on in the tournament and will play Saturday at 11 a.m. against the loser of Friday night's UIC/Youngstown State contest.

Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a single run in the first inning. Junior Mike Goetz doubled to left-center field to start the rally for the Panthers, scoring when senior Brooks Graff singled to center field.

In the sixth, junior Zak Rivera hit a solo home run to center field to start a three-run rally that put Milwaukee up 4-0. Two batters later, sophomore Rob Brockel hit a solo home run of his own, this time to left field. Senior Charlie Reschke followed with a triple to the wall in right field and scored when junior Jeremy Wilson walked on a passed ball.

Keller (6-3) was in control all day, allowing a first-inning triple to Bryan Vickers, before not allowing another base hit until the seventh inning. The right-hander struck out three on the day, walking just two for the Panthers' first shutout since April 12, 2003, also against the Raiders.

Goetz, Reschke and junior Joe Nowicki each collected two hits for Milwaukee, which had six of its 11 hits go for extra bases.

UWM starters have now completed two straight games for the second time this season, as junior Rick Cavaiani went the distance in Thursday's 11-inning loss to Youngstown State. Panther starters have posted a 1.35 ERA over the first three games of the league tourney, allowing just 18 hits over 26.2 innings.

With the win, the Panthers advance into Saturday to play the loser of Friday night's UIC/Youngstown State game at 11 a.m. If UWM wins, it would move on to play the winner of UIC/YSU game later at 7 p.m. Another win, would put a rematch of Saturday's second game at noon on Sunday with the Horizon League Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth on the line.
