Late Chicago State Rally Stuns Panthers, 7-5

CHICAGO, Ill. - Chicago State scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team a 7-5 loss, Friday afternoon in Chicago. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak for the Cougars (4-39), while it is the first loss by the Panthers (17-20) in the series since 2003.

Trailing 4-2 in the eighth, CSU loaded the bases with two outs. A walk to Jonathan Sakurai scored the first run, and he was followed by a hit batter, scoring a second run and tying the game at 4-4. Chicago State took the lead on a passed ball, before taking a 7-4 lead on a two-run single by Brien Allmaras.

Junior Korey Keller got the start and threw four strong innings, allowing two runs over four innings, while striking out four. Junior Rick Cavaiani (2-5) suffered the loss, pitching the final four innings and striking out two.

Milwaukee scored single runs in five different innings, leading things off in the third, taking a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ross McCoy tripled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Steve Sanfilippo. After surrendering two runs in the fourth, UWM tied the game on an RBI single by junior Zak Rivera.

The Panthers took the lead at 3-2 on sophomore Rob Brockel's RBI single in the seventh. They made it 4-2 when junior Joe Nowicki doubled in junior Jeremy Wilson in the eighth. After surrendering the lead, Milwaukee added one more run in the ninth, but could not get any closer at 7-5.

McCoy scored three runs on the day, while senior Charlie Reschke finished with two hits and Rivera two RBIs.

UWM returns to action in another non-league date on Wednesday (May 4) at Iowa. The Panthers and Hawkeyes will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.
