ROCHESTER, Mich. -
Senior Erin Blemberg and junior Emily Duesler finished one-two in both diving events and junior Lindsay Caldwell won the 50 and 100 freestyle to highlight the performance of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team on Saturday at the Oakland University Aquatics Center.
The Panthers finished 1-2 at the Golden Grizzly Quadrangular Meet, defeating Wayne State (155-87) but falling to Cincinnati (132-107) and host Oakland (155-87).
Blemberg won the one-meter event with a season-high 256.00 points, with Duesler coming in second with 227.30. They finished in the same order on the three-meter board, with Blemberg (284.40) and Duesler (239.25) both posting season-highs in the process. With a score of over 280 points in the three-meter event, Blemberg qualifies for the NCAA zone diving.
"We have one of the top diving teams in the league and proved it again today," Milwaukee head coach Dave Clark said. "Erin qualifying for zones was a highlight and Emily has shown great improvement all season. With her coming off a Diver of the Week award last week [Duesler earned the Horizon League honor Oct. 26], this shouldn't be a big surprise."
Caldwell claimed a win in the 50 free with a time of 24.49. She touched the wall in 52.22 in the 100 free to make it two wins on the day. She also teamed with senior Julie Olson, freshman Molly Finn and sophomore Jess Kelly to lead the UWM 400 medley relay team to a third-place showing with a time of 3:56.73.
Finn also had a good day, placing third in both the 200 IM and 200 fly.
"Molly has swam consistently well," Clark said. "Lindsay's 52.2 [in the 100 free] is also way ahead of where she was last year at this time."
The women's 400 free relay team of sophomore Heidi Gietsch, junior Heather Sawatzki, freshman Kristina Hansen and Kelly finished third with a time of 3:45.09. Hansen also placed fifth in the 200 back, just behind senior Emily Holcomb who placed fourth.
"We were a little flat overall," Clark said. "Some individuals were able to step up after a meet yesterday, others struggled."
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, hosting UIC at the Klotsche Center starting at 1 p.m.
