MILWAUKEE -
Theresa Coughlin collected 15 kills as Marquette ended a six-match losing streak against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, downing the Panthers 30-26, 30-24, 30-21 Tuesday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Karen Fruit led the Panthers (4-6) with nine kills, but UWM hit just .135 for the match compared to .266 for Marquette.
Cheryl Hegemann and Rachel Kuebbing added seven kills for the Panthers, while Leanne Felsing led the way defensively with 10 digs.
Kimberley Todd added 12 kills and Erica Heisser 11 for the Golden Eagles (7-3), who recorded their first win over the Panthers since 1997.
The Panthers could never get much going in dropping their fifth-straight match.
"It just looked like Marquette wanted it more than Milwaukee did," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said. "We just made too many errors."
Marquette took control of each of the first two games in the late going. In game one, the Panthers led 5-2 early and still led 12-9 following a block. After the Golden Eagles rallied for a 16-14 advantage, UWM recaptured a 21-20 lead on a Marquette service error. The Panthers still led, 23-22, on a Hegemann kill, but the Golden Eagles closed out the game on a 7-4 run. They took the lead for good at 26-25 on a kill by Todd and closed out the game on another Todd kill.
Game two was knotted at 14-apiece before Marquette pulled away. The lead was 19-16 following a Heisser kill and UWM could never get any closer than two points the rest of the way. It was 22-20 following a Kuebbing kill, but the Golden Eagles scored eight of the final 10 points of the frame to wrap it up.
The Golden Eagles had control of game three early, building a 13-8 lead. The Panthers did rally to within 17-16 on a Marquette error and were still within 18-17 as the teams traded points. But, Marquette scored the next six of the next seven points to re-establish control and never looked back in wrapping up the match.
UWM returns to action Friday night, traveling to UW-Green Bay for a 7 p.m. contest.
