Offense Sends Panthers To Sweep Of Cougars

CHICAGO - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee cracked eight home runs in two games and overcame a slow start in the first game of a doubleheader, claiming a pair of wins over Chicago State Tuesday afternoon.

UWM (19-23) set a season-high for runs during a 19-10 victory in game one before leading from start to finish in a 15-8 win in the nightcap.

The Panthers did have to fight from behind in game one, scoring 14 unanswered runs after trailing 5-1 and 9-5 early in the contest. Charlie Reschke collected four hits, including a pair of home runs, while Ross McCoy went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while Matt Alexander added a 2-for-5 effort with a home run and three RBI. UWM's first five runs of the game came on solo home runs before the Panthers finally started stringing together hits in posting their best offensive performance of the year.

Leroy Pederson worked 3 2/3 innings of relief to claim the win for UWM, allowing just one run and four hits while striking out six.

In the nightcap, the Panthers built a 7-0 lead only to see the Cougars respond with six runs to close the deficit to a run. But, UWM scored seven more runs in the fourth inning to put the game away.

Blake Kangas had three hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in six runs to lead the Panthers. Robert Michalkiewicz cracked his first collegiate grand slam while Reschke and Alexander each had three more hits apiece.

Sam Jansen (2-2) claimed the win, working the first six innings, while Jed Dolske posted three solid innings of relief to record the save.

The Panthers now carry a three-game winning streak into a weekend series at Wright State. The first game of the four-game set is Friday at 5:30 p.m. CST.
