MILWAUKEE -
Sam Jansen pitched six strong innings and Ben Stanczyk hurled three scoreless innings of relief as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee claimed a 6-2 non-conference victory over Chicago State University in very windy conditions here Wednesday (Apr. 28). Jansen allowed only two unearned runs in his six innings to notch his first win as a collegiate pitcher while Stanczyk tied the team-high in saves with four. UWM is now 15-21 on the year while Chicago State falls to 5-38.
The visiting Cougars took an early 1-0 lead thanks to an unearned run in the bottom of the first before a solo run by UWM tied the game in the third. Chicago State got another unearned tally in the top of the fourth before a four-run fifth and one-run sixth gave UWM the comfortable cushion.
In the UWM third, Jansen reached on an infield single, stole second, and moved to third on a Dan Navarette base hit. Charlie Reschke grounded into a double play, scoring Jansen for the game-tying run. Milwaukee scored four runs in the fifth thanks to some wildness by CSU reliever Luis Reynoso. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out which led to RBI walks by Zak Rivera and Stanczyk. Ross McCoy drove home the fifth run of the game with a single to right and a Reynoso wild pitch scored Rivera for the final run of the inning.
The Panthers added their final run in the sixth when a Reschke single scored Robert Michalkiewicz, who led off the inning with a single to left field. From there Stanczyk took ever and, despite battling some wildness, allowed just one hit and struck out four in earning the save. Stanczyk relieved Jansen (1-2) who allowed three hits while striking out four in his longest outing of the year. Reynoso (0-2) took the loss for CSU thanks to four walks and four earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.
Milwaukee will return to Horizon League action on Saturday (May 1) when Detroit comes to Henry Aaron Field for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. On Sunday, the two teams will play another twinbill with this one slated for a 5:00 p.m. start at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
