April 20, 2004

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - While the weather was sloppy the play on the field wasn't a whole lot better as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped a 16-6 contest to Bradley University in non-conference baseball action here Tuesday (Apr. 20). The visiting Braves pounded out 16 hits in the ten-run win while taking advantage of five UWM errors. The game was played in a cold, driving rain for the last five innings which led to the cancellation of game two of the scheduled doubleheader. With the win Bradley improves to 20-12-1 overall while UWM drops to 12-18 on the season.

Bradley took control of the game in the second inning and scored at least one run in each of the last six innings. The Braves took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first before scoring two in the third, four in the fourth, three in the fifth and four more in the sixth to grab a 14-3 lead. UWM scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to get within 14-6 but BU scored two more in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Panther starter Sam Jansen (0-2) took the loss while allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits in four innings of work. Meanwhile ten different Bradley players notched at least one base hit with five players garnering at least two hits. John Sage went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI while Brad Canada went 2-for-4 with three runs driven in.

Milwaukee, which tied a season-high with five errors, collected 11 hits on the game with four different players rapping out two or more base knocks. Freshman Dan Navarette made the most of his first career start as he went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Fellow freshman Ross McCoy went 2-for-4 while Zak Rivera went 2-for-4 with three RBI. BU's Michael Christl (3-2) allowed six earned runs and 10 hits in six innings to earn the victory.

UWM will return to action Thursday (Apr. 22) with a non-conference game at Valparaiso. The Panthers will then head to Cleveland for a four-game Horizon League series with the Vikings of Cleveland State.
