UWM Bounces Back For Split With Detroit

May 3, 2003

Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. - Ben Stanczyk and Charlie Reschke had run-scoring singles in the seventh inning to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to an 11-5 win and a split of its doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the James K. Campbell Athletic Complex.

The Titans won the first game, 3-2, on an RBI single by Roger Wechter in the sixth.

Reschke had four hits and drove in three runs in the second game as the Panthers (21-17, 9-5 Horizon) pounded out 16 hits in the nightcap while taking advantage of five Detroit (11-23, 5-8) errors. UWM starter Mikel Schaefer (5-1) settled down after a three-run first inning, allowing just two unearned runs over the next seven innings to claim the win.

UWM's two-run seventh inning broke a 5-all tie before the Panthers added four insurance runs in the ninth to claim their eighth win in their last nine league games.

Detroit's win in game one snapped a 16-game winning streak by UWM in the series.

The Panthers wasted little time in bolting to a lead in game two, scoring twice in the first on a RBI fielders' choice by Dave Pudlosky and a two-out run-scoring single by Reschke. The Titans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first off Schaefer, but Steve Sanfilippo tied the game with a single in the second.

UWM took the lead on a P.J. Cannon homer in the fourth only to see Detroit tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-out error. UWM again took the lead on a Reschke single in the fifth, but Detroit tied the game thanks to another error in the bottom of the fifth.

After UWM's two-run seventh inning gave the Panthers the lead for good, they added four in the ninth thanks to an RBI single by Cannon, an RBI double by Troy Doering and two Detroit errors.

In game one, the Titans grabbed a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Mike Malley in the third inning. The Panthers rallied in the fourth, tying the game in the top of the fourth on a throwing error by Detroit catcher Dustin Wiley and an RBI single by Sam Jansen.

UWM had plenty of opportunities to then take the lead, leaving two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings. After Detroit took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh. But Titan starter Keith Astrauckas struck out Stanczyk and David Michna to end the game.

Geoff Lefeber (4-4) allowed three runs and five hits in absorbing the loss, while Astrauckas allowed just two runs and five hits to get the win.

The two teams will wrapup their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
