EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern built a 13-2 lead through six innings before hanging on for a 13-10 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.
The Panthers (20-16) rallied for a single run in the seventh, six more in the eighth and another in the ninth before the Wildcats (19-16) were able to escape with the win.
Matt Alexander hit a three-run home run for UWM as part of the six-run eighth inning after Zak Rivera started the rally with a solo home run in the seventh.
Charlie Reschke went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Panthers while David Michna added a two-run single in the first.
David Gresky went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI for Northwestern.
The Panthers led 2-0 after the first half-inning before the Wildcats exploded against starter Leroy Pederson and reliever Jay Molstad. Northwestern scored two times in the second, six times in the fourth, three more times in the fifth and twice in the sixth to build their advantage.
Pederson (1-1) allowed seven earned runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in his first career start.
UWM then rallied after Northwestern starter Dan Pohlman exited the game. Pohlman had allowed just two runs and four hits in six innings but UWM struck back with eight runs over the final three innings against two Wildcat relievers.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday afternoon in a 3 p.m. contest with Northern Illinois.
