CLARKVILLE, Tenn. -
Austin Peay University used strong pitching to record a doubleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday, beating the Panthers 5-1 in the opener before claiming a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, UWM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Troy Doering singled and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and an error before scoring on a David Michna sacrifice fly. But Austin Peay rallied from there, tying the game in the bottom of the first before taking the lead for good with a run in the second and putting it away with three more in the third.
Geoff Lefeber (0-1) worked three innings, allowing five runs and six hits, in taking the loss for the Panthers.
In the nightcap, Jeff Pitrof had a home run and a double but the Panthers again could not muster enough offense to win. Pitrof's third-inning homer tied the game at two, but the Governors scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to claim the win.
Mikel Schaefer (0-1) worked four innings, allowing four hits and all four runs, in absorbing the defeat for UWM.
Doering tallied three hits in the two games while reaching base safely for the 36th and 37th consecutive times.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play a single game, but instead played a pair of seven-inning contests in an attempt to beat the rain moving into Tennessee. The Panthers (0-2) and Governors (4-0) will attempt to play a single game Saturday.
