Poor Shooting Dooms UWM In 59-46 Loss

DURHAM, NH - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team shot a season-low 25.8% from the field in dropping a 59-46 decision to the University of New Hampshire here Thursday (Dec. 11). Molly O'Brien was the only UWM player to reach double figures as she scored 10 points for the Panthers (3-5 on the year). Maren Matthias led New Hamphire with 14 points as it improves to 2-4 on the season.

Cold shooting and shody ball-handling plagued the Panthers early on as UNH jumped out to a 17-2 lead on a Salee-Marie Johnson jumpshot with 12:32 to go in the first half. Milwaukee battled back to cut the lead four, 17-13, thanks to an 11-0 run fueled by an Aubrey Hampton three-pointer and six points by Nichole Drummond. The two teams played even the remainder of the half as UNH took a 26-20 lead into the break.

Milwaukee connected on just 7-of-29 shots in the first stanza while committing 15 turnovers. New Hampshire wasn't much better, as the hosts shot 34.8% from the floor to go with 14 turnovers. UNH was able to create a margin at the free throw line, making seven in the first 20 minutes to UWM's three.

The Panthers came out much more aggressive in the second half, tying the game at 27 on a Kiley Johnson three-ball with 17:47 to play. New Hampshire took the lead 30-29 at the 15:29 mark before both teams struggled to find the basket. Milwaukee had the chance to take its first lead of the game but misfired on six consecutive shots. UWM finally jumped ahead, 31-30, on a Teri Huff driving layup with 11:30 on the clock.

The two teams traded buckets for the next five minutes before the Panthers grabbed their largest lead of the game, 39-37, on Johnson's second three-pointer of the night at 6:06. However, UWM could not find the range the rest of the game as UNH pulled away thanks to five-of-seven shooting from the floor to close out the victory. An Aubrey Hampton layup brought Milwaukee within nine, 53-44, at the 1:36 mark but the Wildcats finished the game with six free throws in the last minute and a half.

Milwaukee hit just 16-of-62 from the floor with All-America Candidate Maria Viall held to seven points on 3-12 shooting. Not all was lost for the senior as Viall led al players with 16 rebounds and four blocked shots. With her second block of the game Viall moved into first-place on UWM's all-time list with 139 rejections. As mentioned, Matthias led UNH with 14 points to go with a team-high eight boards and three blockes. Danielle Clark also reached double-figures with 13 markers.

The Panthers will have 11 days to regroup before heading west on I-94 for an instate battle with the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Dec. 22. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
