Extra Effort Sends UWM To Sweep Of Detroit

May 4, 2002

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Quintin Oldenburg pitched 10 shutout innings and David Michna drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field as UWM beat Detroit, 1-0, to complete a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (24-14, 11-4 Horizon) won game one, 13-3, thanks to a three-run first inning and a seven-run sixth inning.

UWM tied a school record by winning its ninth-straight game and stayed percentage points behind UIC for first place in the Horizon League. The Panthers have won 20 of their last 24 games and are now 12-1 at home.

Oldenburg (6-2) allowed just six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out nine in setting a school record with his 10 innings pitched. Oldenburg's nine strikeouts in the game gave him UWM's all-time school lead at 222, while the win was the 23rd of his career, another school record. The biggest trouble Oldenburg got into in the game was in the 10th, when Detroit put runners on second and third with one out. But he struck out Zak Voit and got Mike Malley to ground to third to end the threat.

UWM's game-winning rally started with a lead-off double from Charlie Reschke. Ben Beno then reached safely on a bunt single before Troy Doering was walked intentionally to load the bases. Detroit starter Charlie Avery (1-4) then struck out Adam Christ before Michna sent a drive to center that easily scored Reschke with the only run of the game.

Avery allowed just six hits and four walks in 9 2/3 innings of work. UWM did have a runner thrown out at home in the sixth and grounded into two double plays but did not seriously threaten in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings before winning the game in the 10th.

In the first game, UWM jumped on starter Matt Spiess (0-5) with three runs in the first inning and knocked him out with another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Panthers then tacked on seven more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Dave Pudlosky led the Panther attack with three hits and four RBI as the three-through-six spots in the Panther order combined for 11 hits and 10 RBI in the first game.

Aaron Bushong (4-3) allowed just one earned run in five innings of work to pick up the win while Matt Freisleben pitched the final two innings for his school-record 11th save.

The series wraps up Sunday with a single game. The first pitch is set for noon.
