MILWAUKEE -
Jeremy Leibfried allowed just two hits in six innings of work in the opener while Steve Guden cracked two home runs and drove in six runs in the nightcap as UWM swept a doubleheader from UW-Parkside, 3-0 and 8-5, Thursday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Guden finished the day with three hits and six RBI. His grand slam in the third inning of game two capped a five-run inning and his two-run blast to left in the fifth capped the scoring for the Panthers (21-14).
Matt Freisleben recorded the final three outs in each win for UWM, collecting his eighth and ninth saves. He is now one save shy of the single-season school record of 10, set by Jon Schreiner in 1997.
In game one, Leibfried (3-0) had a no-hitter through four innings and allowed just five baserunners in the contest. UWM scored twice in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Ben Stanczyk. Dave Pudlosky had walked with one out and Guden followed with a double. After P.J. Cannon popped out, Stanczyk lined a single to left to drive in both runners. The Panthers (21-14) added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Pudlosky.
Steve Kargus (1-8) allowed seven hits in absorbing the loss for Parkside (11-31), which did not advance a runner past second base.
In game two, John Vanden Berg started the scoring for the Panthers with a solo home run in the first. Parkside responded with two runs in the second on an RBI single by Thom Stapleman and a sacrifice fly by Jason Wenzel.
But UWM scored five times in the third to take control of the game. Troy Doering and Matt Alexander reached on singles then advanced to second and third on a double steal. Vanden Berg was walked intentionally before Pudlosky singled in Doering with a hit to right-center. Guden then followed with his blast to left-center off starter Brian Guyer (0-5).
Parkside made it interesting with three more runs in the fourth, knocking UWM starter Jed Dolske from the game. Wenzel drove in a run with a fielder's choice while Kevin Powell had an RBI groundout and Brian Rehm scored on an error.
Reliever Ben Stanczyk (2-0) settled things down for UWM, allowing just one hit in two innings of work to earn the win before Freisleben retired the side in order in the seventh.
UWM, which has now won 17 of its last 21 games, returns to action tomorrow night, hosting Detroit in the opener of a four-game series. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
