Flames Steal A Split From Panthers

May 18, 2002

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Quintin Oldenburg scattered six hits to power UWM to a 3-1 victory against UIC Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. UIC rebounded to take the second game, rallying for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win, 11-6.

Oldenburg struck out eight in the opener as the Panthers (32-17, 15-7 Horizon) scored three runs in the first two innings and held on for the win. David Michna, John Vanden Berg and Charlie Reschke each drove in a run to provide all the offense UWM would need.

The Flames (35-14, 13-5 Horizon) scored their only run on a bases-loaded balk by Oldenburg in the top of the fourth inning. Panther head coach Jerry Augustine was ejected on the play for arguing the call.

In the second game, the Panthers jumped out to another early advantage, only to lose the lead late in the game for the second-straight night. The Panthers struck for four runs in the first inning behind a three-run home run by Dave Pudlosky and a solo shot by David Michna off Flames' starter Wes Gilliam.

The Flames chipped away at the lead and trailed 6-5 as the game headed into the top of the seventh inning. UIC hit releiver Matt Freisleben, who had entered the game in with one out in the top of the sixth inning and worked out of the jam, for four runs before he was lifted in favor of Ben Stanczyk. Stanczyk gave up another pair of runs before Cory Kleeba ended the outburst by getting the final two outs of the inning.

Nelson Gord went 2-for-3 in the second game with three RBI to lead the Flames, capped off by a three-run home run off UWM starter Aaron Bushong in the top of the fifth inning. Bushong worked five and one-third innings for UWM in the second game, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out two.

With today's split, the Flames can clinch the top seed in next week's Horizon League Tournament in Cleveland with a win tomorrow. A win by the Panthers would force UIC to travel to Youngstown, Ohio, to complete a suspended game against the Penguins to determine the top seed in the tournament.
