UWM Rolls Past Chicago State

May 15, 2002

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - UWM moved past the 30-win plateau for the fifth-straight season while sweeping a doubleheader from Chicago State, 6-2 and 9-4, Wednesday evening at Henry Aaron Field.

Matt Freisleben picked up his 15th save of the season in game one, moving him into second place nationally in saves, while John Vanden Berg had four hits in game two.

Ben Stanczyk (3-0) grabbed the win in game one with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Cory Kleeba (3-1) was the winner in game two, not allowing a hit in two innings of relief. Charlie Reschke, Adam Christ and P.J. Cannon each had three hits in the doubleheader for UWM.

The Panthers (31-15) have won 16 of their last 17 games and are 15-1 at home this season.

In game one, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 after the Cougars (5-32) scored once in the first and once in the second. But UWM rallied, scoring a single run on an Christ RBI single in the third before tying the game in the fourth when a run came home on a Shane Davis double play groundout.

The Panthers then took the lead with four runs in the sixth inning. David Michna started the inning with a double and moved to third on a Steve Guden single. Michna then scored by beating a throw home on a Dave Pudlosky ground ball. After Davis popped out, Reschke drove in two runs with a double and Cannon capped the scoring with another double.

Jeremy Leibfried worked the first three innings as the starter for UWM, while Stanczyk retired 10 batters in a row before allowing a triple and a walk. That brought on Freisleben, who struck out the only two batters he faced.

In game two, the Panthers jumped to a 3-0 lead after one inning and never trailed. Pudlosky drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Vanden Berg drove in a run with a single and Cannon brought home another run with a ground ball. UWM scored again in the second on a Reschke single and added two more in the third on an RBI single by Cannon and a Chicago State error. The Panthers also scored one more in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Starter Rob Erickson worked the first three innings, allowing two runs, before Kleeba worked through the fourth and fifth innings. Jed Dolske allowed two runs in relief before Mikel Schafer retired the side in the seventh.

Don Newgent (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars after working only the first inning. Chicago State committed five errors in game two and could muster just 11 hits in the doubleheader.

UWM returns to action Friday night, opening a four-game series with UIC at Henry Aaron Field. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
