NILES, Ohio -
Geoff Lefeber tossed a two-hit complete game as UWM earned a split of its doubleheader with Youngstown State Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 victory in game two.
The Penguins (17-23, 11-8 Horizon) ended UWM's school-record 13-game winning streak with a come-from-behind, 8-7, win over the Panthers (29-15, 14-5) in game one.
Lefeber (4-0) worked his first complete game of the season and won for the third time in four league starts. He did not walk or strike out a batter in lowering his overall ERA to 1.98 and his league ERA to 1.04.
Offensively in game two, Dave Pudlosky continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 effort and three RBI. David Michna also had two hits as the Panthers scored one time in the first and five times in the fifth.
Corey Ohalek allowed all six runs on seven hits in tossing a complete game for Youngstown.
In game one, UWM built a 7-0 lead after 5 1/2 innings but surrendered eight runs in the sixth to absorb its first loss since April 26. Aaron Bushong was charged with four of the runs in five-plus innings of work while Mikel Schaefer (1-2) was charged with the other four in working just one-third of an inning.
The Panthers built their lead thanks to two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Charlie Reschke led the Panther attack with the first four-hit day of his career. Troy Doering added three hits while Pudlosky pitched in with two more hits and an RBI.
Matt Freisleben made his 30th appearance of the season on the mound in the sixth for the Panthers, tying his own single-season school record. He now has 108 career appearances, also the most-ever for a Panther.
Matt Brumit (4-4) allowed seven runs in six innings but claimed the win. Kendall Schlabach and Jim Phillips had two hits apiece to pace the Penguins.
The split allowed the Panthers to remain a game ahead of UIC (11-4) and three games ahead of Youngstown State in the Horizon League standings. UIC had its doubleheader with Detroit rained out Saturday afternoon. Those two teams will try to play a tripleheader Sunday afternoon.
The series is scheduled to wrap up Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. EDT. But, rain is forecast throughout the day in the Youngstown area.
