Panther Streak Hits Lucky 13

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - UWM extended its school-record winning streak to 13 games with a 7-6 win over Youngstown State Friday night.

Dave Pudlosky hit his first home run of the season and Matt Freisleben retired the final seven batters of the game to earn his 14th save as the Panthers (28-14, 13-4 Horizon League) maintained a one-game lead over UIC atop the Horizon League standings.

UWM built a 7-0 lead thanks to two runs in the second inning, four more in the third inning and a single run in the sixth. But Youngstown State (16-22, 10-7) rallied with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, knocking starter Quintin Oldenburg from the game.

After Cory Kleeba allowed another run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Freisleben entered to record the final out of the inning and then set the side down in order in the eighth and ninth to clinch the win for UWM.

Oldenburg (7-2) won his fourth-straight decision, allowing four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Pudlosky, Steve Guden and Troy Doering had two hits apiece for the Panthers, who won for the 24th time in their last 28 games and for the seventh-straight time on the road.

Pudlosky's three-run home run to right was a part of the four-run third that also included an RBI single to left by Shane Davis. Charlie Reschke starting the scoring in the game for the Panthers in the second with a fielder's choice that drove in a run while Guden scored the second run of that inning on an error. Doering scored on an error in the sixth, capping the scoring for UWM.

Jonathan Smart (3-2) was charged with all seven runs in absorbing the loss for the Penguins, who got two hits apiece from Jim Lipinski, Adam Cox and Jim Phillips.

UIC, 11-4 in the Horizon League, beat Detroit, 11-3, Friday evening in Chicago to remain a game back of the Panthers in the league standings. Youngstown State fell three games back of UWM with the loss.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader and concludes Sunday with a single game.
