Jeff Pitrof hit a grand slam and Quintin Oldenburg tied the school records for career wins and strikeouts as UWM claimed a 15-2 win over Cleveland State in the finale of a four-game series Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (18-14, 8-4 Horizon) scored eight times in the third inning after two men were out, then scored five more times in the fourth inning to put the game away. The win moved UWM to within a game of UIC for the top spot in the Horizon League. The Flames were idle this weekend.
Oldenburg (5-2) worked seven innings, allowing just two runs and five hits while striking out 10 batters. The win was the 22nd of Oldenburg's career, tying Chad Sadowski for UWM's all-time mark. Oldenburg also now has 213 career strikeouts, tying Sadowski for the all-time school record.
Pitrof's grand slam highlighted UWM's five-run fourth inning. He finished the day with a career-high three hits and five runs batted in. Ryan Dolan drove in two runs during the Panthers' eight-run third and totaled a career-best four hits and four RBI. Steve Guden added
a two-run homer for the Panthers in the third while David Michna cracked a solo homer in the ninth for UWM, which collected 13 hits in the game.
Dave Pudlosky added two hits in extending his hitting streak to six games while Michna's home run pushed his hitting streak to nine games.
David Boyza (2-6) worked the first three innings for the Vikings, allowing eight runs and seven hits. Ben Smith had a solo home run for Cleveland State (11-25, 5-7), which scored just 10 runs off UWM in the four-game series.
The contest was delayed 38 minutes by rain in the top of the fourth inning.
UWM returns to action Tuesday afternoon, playing a single game at Northwestern. The Panthers then open a six-game homestand Thursday with a doubleheader against UW-Parkside. League foe Detroit visits Henry Aaron Field Friday to start a four-game series.
