April 27, 2002

Box Score

EUCLID, Ohio - Aaron Bushong pitched his second-straight complete game in the opener and Kory Kleeba worked 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the nightcap as UWM claimed a doubleheader sweep over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (17-14, 7-4 Horizon) won the opener 8-2 as Bushong allowed just six hits and two walks to move to 3-3 on the season. In the second game, UWM overcame three first-inning runs off starter Rob Erickson to win 4-3 thanks to 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief from Kleeba (1-1) and Matt Freisleben, who recorded his league-leading sixth save.

In game one, the Panthers scored three times in the first inning and added single runs in the second and fifth to take control of the game. Adam Christ had three hits and scored two runs while Troy Doering added two hits and scored two runs as the top three batters in UWM's order combined for six hits, five runs scored and three RBI. Christ had an RBI and John Vanden Berg two in the seventh as the Panthers added three insurance runs.

Cleveland State starter Brian Beaumier (3-2), who won Friday night's game with a ninth-inning home run, surrendered five runs in five innings while reliever Brandon Finomore allowed three more runs in two innings. But, all eight UWM runs were unearned thanks to five Viking errors.

In game two, Cleveland State built a 3-1 lead early while knocking Erickson out of the game after just 1 1/3 innings of work. The Panthers then rallied for three runs in the top of the third inning as Dave Pudlosky drove in a run with a ground out and Steve Guden drove in two more with a double into left field.

Kleeba allowed just two hits and didn't allow a runner to reach third base in his four-plus innings of relief. After recording the final out in the sixth inning, Freisleben got into trouble in the seventh thanks to two UWM errors. But, Doug Besozzi was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from second on an error and Jeff Katlen grounded out to second to end the game.

Matt Kaltenbach (0-5) allowed all four runs in working the complete game for the Vikings.

Weather permitting, the series wraps up tomorrow with a single game, slated to begin at 11 a.m. CDT. UWM ace Quintin Oldenburg, who gained his fourth win of the season against Bradley Wednesday afternoon, will get the start for the Panthers.

Notes: Oldenburg will be looking to tie the school record for career wins in Sunday's start. The senior has 21 victories in his career, one shy of the record of 22 set by Chad Sadowski. He is also 10 strikeouts shy of Sadowski's record of 213 ... David Michna's hit in game two of the doubleheader extended his career-best hitting streak to seven games. Dave Pudlosky has also hit safely in all three games of the series and now has a five-game hitting streak ... With the 4-3 win in game two, UWM is now 7-6 in one-run games
