Butler Ends Panther Winning Streak

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - John Corcoran won his league-leading eighth game as Butler claimed a 5-2 victory over UWM in the opener of a four-game series Friday afternoon.

Corcoran allowed just six hits in working his sixth complete game of the season. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for UWM (11-12, 3-2 Horizon).

The Panthers did bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Shane Davis lined out to second base to end the contest.

Butler's big inning came in the sixth. Tim Marks singled and, after the next two batters were retired, Dale Mueller singled and Jeff Steele walked to load the bases. Ryan Nance followed with a three-run double to deep center field to make the score 5-1.

The Bulldogs (21-13, 4-5) opened the scoring with a run in the second on a single by Matt Crews and Butler added another run in the third on a single by Nance. The Panthers scored a single run in the sixth on a RBI single by Ben Beno and added their second run in the seventh on a run-scoring ground out by David Michna.

UWM starter Quintin Oldenburg (3-2) worked seven innings for the Panthers, allowing five runs and 11 hits.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for noon.
