MILWAUKEE -
Another late-inning rally, another win for the UWM baseball team.
This time, the Panthers scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 5-4 win over Wright State Sunday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field. The win was UWM's third in four games this weekend against the Raiders and gives the Panthers wins in 16 of their last 18 home games.
UWM (9-11, 3-1 Horizon) trailed 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings and still trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth. But, John Vanden Berg opened the inning with a walk, knocking Raider starter Casey Abrams from the game. Steve Guden doubled off reliever Eric Oberding (0-3) before Shane Davis doubled in both Vanden Berg and Guden to tie the game, 4-4. Aaron Braden, who tossed a complete-game victory Saturday, then relieved Oberding. Dan Kardelis advanced pinch-runner Ryan Dolan to third with a sacrifice bunt before Jeff Pitrof cracked a line-drive single to left to plate the go-ahead run.
Quintin Oldenburg (3-1) worked the final 1 2/3 innings, including a perfect top of the ninth, to claim his second win of the series. The victory is the 20th of Oldenburg's career, making him just the third Panther in UWM's Division I history to tally 20 career wins. Cory Kleeba worked 6 2/3 innings of stellar relief for UWM before Oldenburg's appearance, allowing just one run and six hits while not walking a batter.
Wright State (9-18, 3-5) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first off of UWM starter Korey Keller, who lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Keller walked four batters before Matt Barhorst capped the inning with a two-run single. The Raiders then added a single run in the third before UWM began to rally. Vanden Berg drove in a run with a single in the third while Kardelis brought home another run in the sixth with a double.
