Comeback Earns Split For UWM

April 13, 2002

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - UWM scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-5 victory over Wright State and a split in its doubleheader at Henry Aaron Field Saturday.

Wright State (9-17, 3-4 Horizon) won the first game 8-3, but could not hold on to a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of seventh in the nightcap. Dave Pudlosky brought home the winning run with a slow-roller through the legs of Wright State second baseman Brandon Osborne, who committed three of the Raiders' five errors in the gane.

Pinch-hitter Dan Kardelis started the seventh for UWM (8-11, 2-1) with a double, forcing Raider starter Nathan Kopp from the game. Troy Doering then walked off reliever J.P. Jung (0-5) before Adam Christ singled in Kardelis to make it 5-3. John Vanden Berg drove in a run while reaching on an error to make it 5-4 before Steve Guden reached on a fielder's choice with Doering beating a throw home, tying the game, 5-5. Shane Davis then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the winning run to third before Casey Abrams entered the game to face Pudlosky, who sent the Panthers home with a split.

Matt Freisleben (2-3) allowed just one unearned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for the UWM, who had just five hits in the contest. The comeback also allowed the Panthers to avoid its first home doubleheader sweep since the 1998 season.

In game one, Wright State starter Aaron Braden (5-3) allowed just seven hits and did not walk a batter in throwing the complete game. Nick Shields hit a three-run home run and Bryan Vickers added a two-run blast as the Raiders built an early 6-1 lead and cruised. UWM starter Aaron Bushong (1-3) gave up five runs in lasting just two-plus innings.

The two teams wrap up their four-game series Sunday at Henry Aaron Field. The first pitch is set for noon.
