MILWAUKEE -
Quintin Oldenburg struck out a school-record 12 batters and Steve Guden cracked a two-run home run as UWM scored a 4-2 win over Wright State Friday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Oldenburg (2-1), the league's pitcher of the year a season ago, led UWM to the win in its Horizon League opener by striking out nine batters in the first five innings. He gave up just two runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings while Matt Freisleben recorded the final five outs to pick up his second save.
The Panthers (7-10, 1-0 Horizon) got on the board first in the third on a two-run single by John Vanden Berg. After Wright State (8-16, 2-3) pulled to within 2-1, Guden added insurance with his two-run blast to center in the sixth.
Troy Doering, Shane Davis and Charlie Reschke each had two hits apiece for the Panthers, who recorded 10 hits in the game and have collected 38 hits in their first three home games. The Panthers have now won three straight games and have won 15 of their last 16 games at Henry Aaron Field.
UWM and Wright State continue their series Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader. The first pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m.
