UNI Comeback Downs UWM Baseball

March 27, 2002

Box Score

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Brady Weber's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Northern Iowa to a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over UWM Wednesday afternoon.

UWM (4-8) led 6-0 after the top of the fourth inning but UNI scored in each of its final five at bats to claim its 13th win in 17 games.

UWM grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run home run by Charlie Reschke, the first of his career. The Panthers extended the lead to 5-0 on a three-run home run by David Michna in the third and led 6-0 after a John Vanden Berg double in the fourth.

But UNI slowly fought back off starter Quintin Oldenburg and three UWM relievers. UNI scored a single run in the fourth, two more runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to tie the game.

UNI scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh to build an 8-6 advantage, but Vanden Berg cracked a three-run homer to left field in the eighth to give UWM a 9-8 lead before UNI rallied for the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the inning.

Matt Freisleben (1-3) worked the eighth for the Panthers and took the loss. Oldenburg worked the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits.

UWM returns to action next Tuesday and Wednesday with single games at Nebraska, which qualified for the College World Series last year.
