UWM Baseball Splits Two

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - UWM split a pair of games at the Homestead Challenge Monday afternoon, beating Rider, 11-4, before falling to Kansas State, 8-7.

Against Rider, senior John Vanden Berg cracked his second home run of the year to lead an 11-hit attack for the Panthers. Vanden Berg, Matt Alexander and Steve Guden had two hits apiece for UWM.

Sophomore Aaron Bushong was in control throughout the game on the mound, scattering seven hits in tossing a complete game. Bushong struck out five while not walking a batter.

In the evening game against Kansas State, the Panthers (4-5) scored five times in the first inning but could not hang on. Matt Freisleben absorbed the loss in relief for UWM. Ben Beno recorded a career-high four hits while David Michna went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

UWM returns to action Wednesday night, facing defending national champion Miami (Fla.). The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. CST.
