Feb. 23, 2002

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A spirited Panther comeback fell short in game one and UWM wound up dropping a doubleheader to Kansas Saturday afternoon, 8-7 and 13-1.

UWM (0-3) fell behind 7-1 after five innings in game one, but rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Troy Doering picked up the first RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Ben Stanczyk brought home two more runs with a double down the right-field line.

After the Jayhawks (8-0) added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Panthers again rallied in the ninth, scoring three runs on fielder's choice plays. UWM then had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position but Ryan Dolan grounded out to end the game.

Starter Korey Keller worked the first 2 2/3 innings in absorbing the loss.

In game two, UWM starter Mikel Schaffer allowed seven runs in just 1 2/3 innings of work and the Panthers could never recover. UWM's lone run came on a John Vanden Berg solo home run in the fifth.

The Panthers return to action next weekend, traveling to Omaha, Neb., for four games. UWM will face Creighton three times and play Nebraksa-Omaha in a single game.
